Head of AI: the leadership title Europe is hiring for.
On LinkedIn's 2026 list of fastest-growing jobs, Head of AI is number one in Germany and number two in France, Italy, Spain and the UK. Below: what the role owns, how it differs from a CTO and a Chief AI Officer, and what it looks like from Prague and Warsaw.

Where Head of AI ranks in Europe
LinkedIn counts job starts from January 2023 to July 2025 and ranks titles by growth. Only two engineering titles reach the top three anywhere in Europe: AI engineer and Head of AI. One is the builder, the other is the leader who hires them (LinkedIn Jobs on the Rise 2026, Europe).
| Country | Head of AI, rank among fastest-growing jobs |
|---|---|
| Germany | 1 |
| France | 2 |
| Italy | 2 |
| Spain | 2 |
| United Kingdom | 2 |
No Czech or Polish edition exists. The nearest count is a recruiter dataset: about 72,500 AI-engineering openings across Europe between June 2025 and August 2026, with Poland at 2,116 and Czechia at 418 in the six months to August (PredictLeads, August 2026). Leadership seats are a few percent of any such count, so a Head of AI opening in Prague is rare and watched by everyone.
What a Head of AI leads
People
A small applied AI team, often the first one the company has had, and a dotted line to every engineer who now ships with AI tooling. Hiring competes with the labs.
Technology
Which models, which data, build or buy, and the evaluation harness that tells the company whether any of it works. Cost per request is a Head of AI number before it is a finance number.
AI agents
The shared agent platform, the guardrails, and the answer to who owns an agent’s mistake. When the CFO asks why the token bill doubled, this is the desk it lands on.

Head of AI, CTO or Chief AI Officer
Three titles, three different jobs. Companies mix them up in ads, which is why candidates ask us which one they are being interviewed for.
| CTO | Head of AI | Chief AI Officer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reports to | CEO | CTO, sometimes CEO or CPO | CEO or the board |
| Owns | All of engineering and technology | The applied AI team and the AI platform the rest of engineering uses | AI strategy, risk and governance across every function |
| Hands-on | Rarely | Usually, often the most senior practitioner in the building | No, the role is a mandate, not a team |
| Typical company | Any | Scale-up with 50 to 500 engineers | Enterprise, regulated, or a board that asked |
Gartner expects 70% of software engineering leader role descriptions to require generative AI oversight by 2027, up from under 40% (Gartner, via DevOpsDigest). In practice that means the CTO absorbs the AI mandate in most companies, and a Head of AI is who they hire so they can. Read the Chief AI Officer page for the case where the board wants its own seat.

Heads of AI in ELC rooms
The registry counts at least 173 directors and heads of engineering and 88 CTOs among members with a recorded title, the two groups a Head of AI reports to or sits beside. The full census is on the statistics page.
- AI Masters circle. Bi-weekly, peers from other companies, the place to compare model bills and eval setups. Part of company membership.
- Executive AI Program. For the leader who has to explain AI to a board. The program page has the format and the price.
- 1:1 mentoring with leaders who run AI orgs themselves; Marian's own note on AI adoption pressure is a good first read.
- Free membership. 3,200+ engineering leaders across four cities. Join ELC.

What does a Head of AI do?
Runs the team that builds AI into the product and the platform other teams use to build with it. In a scale-up that is a small applied team plus the shared tooling, evaluation and cost controls for agents. The role is hands-on more often than a CTO.
Head of AI or Chief AI Officer, which one does a company need?
Head of AI when the work is building. Chief AI Officer when the work is deciding: risk, governance, budget across departments. Most companies under 500 engineers need the first. The second makes sense once a board or a regulator asks for one owner of AI risk.
Is Head of AI in demand in the Czech Republic and Poland?
The role is real but the volume is small. Europe posted about 72,500 AI-engineering openings between June 2025 and August 2026; Poland had 2,116 and Czechia 418 in the six months to August 2026, and leadership seats are a few percent of that. LinkedIn does not publish a Czech or Polish edition of its list.
Do I need a PhD to become a Head of AI?
Not in a product company. What gets people the seat is having shipped AI features that survived contact with users, plus the judgement to say which model, which data and what it costs. Research labs are the exception.
