Roles · updated 3 September 2026
Engineering leaders lead people, technology and AI agents.
One title on a business card, three things to run: the people on the team, the systems they build, and the agents that now write a growing share of the code. Below are the roles that sit in ELC rooms, grouped by what they lead most, and where each one is heading.

Lead the org
The budget, the org chart, and the answer when the board asks about AI.
These are the seats company membership partners want in the room. Two of them did not exist in most companies three years ago.
Lead people and agents
One team of humans, and now a fleet of agents under them.
The largest group in ELC rooms and the job changing shape fastest. The manager of one small human team is the seat under pressure; the manager of several mostly agentic teams is where it goes.
Lead technology
No reports, big blast radius.
Where flattened management scope lands. Senior postings are 71% of the US software hiring rebound since early 2025, and the Staff engineer with an AI fleet is the other half of the engineering manager fork.
The senior-hiring figure is Indeed Hiring Lab's, July 2026: 71% of the growth in US software development postings since May 2025 is senior roles (source).
Who is in the room, counted
Counted from the 1263 member profiles with a recorded title, out of 3172 active members at the count date. Each figure is a floor, never a share of the whole community. The full census and its method are on the statistics page.
| Recorded title | Type | Members, at least |
|---|---|---|
| CTO or CIO | Lead the org | 88 |
| VP of Engineering | Lead the org | 44 |
| Director or Head of Engineering | Lead the org | 173 |
| Engineering Manager or Team Lead | Lead people and agents | 289 |
| Staff, Principal or Architect | Lead technology | 112 |

Where the three types meet
12 across Prague, Brno, Bratislava and Kraków, 5, and one conference a year. The same room holds all three types, which is the point: the CTO hears what the staff engineer is seeing in the agent logs, and the engineering manager hears what the board is about to ask.

Questions people ask
Do I need to manage people to join ELC?
No. Staff and principal engineers and architects lead technology and, increasingly, agents. They sit in the same rooms as the managers and the meetup line-up is written for both. Joining is free and has no title check.
Is ELC for AI engineers?
ELC is for the people who lead. An AI engineer who is starting to lead a team, a platform or a fleet of agents is exactly who the AI Masters circle is built for. If you build all day and lead nobody yet, the meetups are still open and free, and the talks will make sense sooner than you think.
My title is not on this page. Where do I fit?
Pick the type by what you spend your week on: the org and its budget, a team and its agents, or the systems themselves. Titles differ by company; the three jobs do not. If none fits, write to weare@engineeringleaders.io and we will tell you honestly.
